Moss and weeds in paving is one of the most common things we get asked about, especially on shady patios and north-facing driveways. Here’s what actually works.
Why does it keep happening?
The gaps between blocks collect dirt and seeds. Over time the jointing sand washes out, which leaves the perfect spot for weeds to take hold. Add shade and damp and you’ve got moss.
Getting the weeds out
- Weeding knife: a patio knife is cheap and gets right into the joints. Try to get the roots out, not just the tops.
- Weed burner: good for bigger areas. Use it on a dry day and keep well away from fences and hedges.
- Weedkiller: for stubborn weeds, use one made for paths and paving and follow the label. Keep it off your lawn and borders.
What we’d avoid
Salt, bleach and neat vinegar get recommended online a lot. They can stain paving, damage nearby plants and get into the soil. Boiling water is fine for small areas though.
Getting rid of moss
Scrape and brush off as much as you can with a stiff brush, then treat with a moss killer. For a proper deep clean, jet washing works brilliantly. Keep the lance at an angle and not too close, otherwise you can damage the surface.
The step most people skip: re-sanding
Jet washing blasts the sand out of the joints. If you don’t replace it, weeds are back within weeks. Once the paving is completely dry, brush kiln-dried sand into the joints until they’re full.
Should I seal it?
A block paving sealant helps lock the sand in place and makes it harder for moss and weeds to get going. It’s worth doing if you’ve just had it cleaned.
Keeping on top of it
- Sweep regularly, especially in autumn when leaves sit and rot.
- Cut back overhanging plants to let more light in.
- Pull weeds while they’re small.
