Hedge Cutting & Shaping in Surrey & West Sussex

Southern Garden Maintenance provides professional hedge cutting and shaping services across Redhill, Coulsdon, Crawley, Reigate and the surrounding Surrey & West Sussex area. Whether your hedges have crept out of shape over the summer or haven’t been cut in years, our experienced local team will bring them back under control – cleanly, safely, and without the hassle.

We’re fully insured, carry our own equipment, and remove all cuttings from your property at the end of every job. No mess left behind.

What our hedge cutting service includes

Every hedge cutting job is different — we adapt to the size, species and condition of your hedges, and the finish you want. Here’s what you can expect from our service:

  • Precision cutting and shaping — clean, straight lines on formal hedges; natural shaping on informal or mixed hedges. We take care with angles so your hedge looks right from the street as well as the garden.
  • All sizes handled — from low box hedging to tall boundary hedges up to 6 metres. We carry the right equipment for the job so you don’t need to worry about access or height.
  • All species covered — privet, laurel, leylandii, beech, hawthorn, box, yew, hornbeam and more. Each species has different growth habits and we cut accordingly.
  • Sides and top trimmed together — we don’t just take the top off. Proper hedge maintenance shapes the full profile so light reaches the base and the hedge stays healthy and dense.
  • Full clearance of all cuttings — all hedge trimmings are collected and removed from your property at the end of the job. We leave your garden tidy.
  • Safe working practices throughout — we assess access, use appropriate equipment for height and location, and work safely on slopes, boundaries and near structures.

If your hedges are severely overgrown — thicker than normal or significantly taller than they should be — we’ll be upfront about whether they need a phased approach. Some overgrown hedges benefit from a two-stage cut to avoid stressing the plant.

Why choose Southern Garden Maintenance for hedge cutting in Surrey

  • Fully insured — public liability insurance as standard, so you’re covered if anything unexpected happens on your property during the job.
  • We remove all cuttings — every quote includes full clearance of cuttings. No skips to arrange, no green waste to deal with.
  • Right equipment for every job — from hand shears for delicate topiary to long-reach cutters for tall boundary hedges. We don’t arrive underprepared.
  • Honest advice on overgrown hedges — if a hedge needs a phased approach or specialist work, we’ll tell you before we start rather than after.
  • Local Surrey team — we know the area, the common hedge species in RH and CR postcodes, and the access challenges that come with Surrey properties. No call centres, no subcontractors.
  • No pressure quoting — we give you a clear price and let you decide. No obligation, no follow-up calls.

How hedge cutting quotes and pricing work

We don’t publish fixed prices for hedge cutting because every job is genuinely different — the length, height, species, thickness and access all affect how long it takes. What we do guarantee is clear, honest pricing before we start any work.

What affects the price

  • Length and height of the hedge — longer or taller hedges take more time and sometimes require specialist equipment.
  • Species and growth rate — dense, slow-growing hedges like yew require more careful work than fast-growing privet; heavily overgrown hedges take longer to bring back into shape.
  • Access — hedges on slopes, next to fences or close to structures take more time to work safely. Hedges along a public footpath or road have additional considerations.
  • Whether cuttings need removal — all our quotes include removal of cuttings as standard, but it’s worth confirming this when we quote.

How to get a quote

We aim to respond to all quote requests within one business day.

FAQs

Here are some common questions we receive.
When is the best time of year to cut hedges?

For most species, late summer through to mid-autumn (August to October) is ideal — after the main growing season but before the first hard frosts. This gives hedges a clean finish going into winter. Some fast-growing species like privet and leylandii benefit from a second cut in early summer. We’ll advise on the best timing for your specific hedge when we quote.

Yes. All cuttings are collected and removed from your property at the end of the job as standard. We don’t leave bags at the kerbside or ask you to arrange collection. This is included in the price we quote, so there are no surprises.

Yes, though very overgrown hedges sometimes need a different approach. For hedges that have grown significantly out of shape, we may recommend a phased cut over two visits; one to reduce the bulk, and a second to finish and shape, particularly with species that can be stressed by hard cutting. We’ll discuss this with you before starting and won’t take anything back further than is healthy for the plant.

It depends on the species and how formal a finish you want. Fast-growing hedges like privet, leylandii and escallonia typically need two cuts per year. Slower-growing species like beech, hornbeam and yew usually need just one annual cut. Box hedging benefits from one careful cut per year, ideally in late summer. We can advise on the right frequency for your hedges when we visit.

Yes. We’re experienced in cutting hedges on boundaries, adjacent to fencing, close to walls, and along roads and public footpaths. We assess access and any additional considerations before quoting and carry appropriate equipment for the job.
